Feature and Follow Friday is host by Parajunkee and Allison Can Read and give bloggers a topic to discuss each week while discovering new blogs.
Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can't deal with bad editing?
I haven't really come across a single reason that makes me give up on a book. I hate bad grammar and incorrect facts but I have only stopped reading one book because of the latter.
There are things I don't like (love triangles, insta-love, etc) but I can usually keep reading anyway if the rest of the story is good enough.
I rarely DNF books and for me to do so the book needs to be really really bad. Thus far, I haven't come across many books I've had to give up on. I like to give a book a fair go, and I have a tendency to steer away from books that I might give up on, thanks to all the awesome reviewers out there that I follow.
How about you? Leave me your link in the comments so I can see your answer. =)
I don't think I've ever not finished a book. I've stopped for a moment and gone back to one but never not finished it. Even if there are things that annoy me.

I agree, the book has to be horrendously bad for me to put it down.

I'm normally good at finishing books too. The novel has really got to be terrible if I can't finish it.
ReplyDeleteI'm an old(ish) follower. But here's my FF if you want to see my answer :)
Definitely agree! There are things that can annoy me but I rarely stop reading a book because of them unless they are really horrendous!

Have a GREAT weekend!

I totally agree. I rarely give up on a book because of certain things. A lot has to be bad for me to give up.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
I have just given up on 'The Iron Fey' series . . the love triangle was just too much (and Meghan UGH!!!) . . .maybe I'll go back to it . . .

I don't really give up on books either.

I feel the same way! I rarely DNF a book, and though there are many elements that I don't like - including love triangles - there's always exceptions to the rule.

That's a great answer, and I am the same. I stalk the book on Goodreads and trust in my fellow bloggers that a book is good. There are a couple of series that I haven't read because of this. I rarely DNF a book too! I learned from experience with one book that was compared to Romeo and Juliet.. the first 60% was crap, but the ending was amazing and I cried!

It is also very rare that I give up on a book, but there are still some things that I consider deal-breakers; and that make me give a very low rating and a negative review :)
ReplyDeleteI am an 'old' follower, here's my FF post for this week.
Have a fantastic Friday!
Great answer! Considering how many books I read, I DNF about 1 out of 35. That only happens when I just can't bare to go on.
ReplyDeleteI usually just try to read through my pet peeves.
Great answers. I'm not a fan of insta-love either. Old follower. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat answer :) I'm glad to hear you like most of the books you read!
ReplyDeleteFF @thedailyprophecy.
Great answer. I agree. I will finish a book most of the time, so there aren't many deal breakers, only things I don't like some of the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and following. Following you back via GFC.

Hi Sabina,
ReplyDeleteNew follower via GFC. Just wanted to stop by, read your answer and say thanks for following The Book Asylum! I am one of those who can't stop reading a book either, even if it's annoying the hell out of me. I have to finish. Very rarely do I not finish. I usually hold out hope that there's something great coming, you know? :)
Happy Friday!
Meg
Too many characters is one of mine.

I've only DNF'd one book, and I only got like 3 chapters in so I didn't really give it much of a chance. The writing was just too boring and hard to follow. I will probably go back to it one day, but currently, nope.

I agree with you completely, great answer! I've only DNF-ed 2-3 books ever. I'm usually to stubborn to quit reading but in some rare cases it was so bad that I gave up completely. I mentioned editing in my FFF this week as well. Thanks for sharing :)

Nice answer. Most of the time I don't give up on books but I have a few. they have to really be bad or just not hold my attention at all. my FF http://jennreneeread.blogspot.com/2012/11/follow-friday-37.html new follower.
ReplyDeleteI try not to give up either but sometimes I have just had to. New follower via GFC and linky

I definitely agree with you. It takes a lot for me to give up on book and fortunately it hasn't happened yet. Thanks for stopping by my FF Old follower.
ReplyDeleteI used to hate giving up on books, because I put that time in I want to say I've read it! But lately with so many books to read, if it's not clicking I do give it. Still makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my post, I'm a new follower!
I try to give books a good attempt at finishing them, too. Unless I have a very good reason, I don't fully give up on a book the first time around. I generally try the book again if I can't get through it the first time. Never know when it's just an issue of what mood I'm in.

Great answer! I always try to finish books too. Even if I don't end up liking it, I just like to give the book a chance and have a well formed opinion of it. But unfortunately, lately there have been a few I DNF. I think the more books I have in my TBR pile, the less chances I'm going to give a bad book. I'd just rather not waste my time on a book I'm not enjoying when I have a huge pile of possibly amazing books to read!
ReplyDeleteLove your answer! I also try to finish books, but I think I've got a few DNFs, mostly because it gets too predictable/boring/I no longer care what happens.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and following my blog, I’ve returned the favor :)
