eARC Review: Contaminated by Em Garner

Title: Contaminated
Author: Em Garner
Publication Date: July 23, 2013
Publisher: Egmont USA

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian, Zombies
Source: Publisher via Netgalley

Description

After the Contamination—an epidemic caused by the super-trendy diet drink ThinPro that turned ordinary citizens into violent, uncontrollable creatures—the government rounded up the "Connies" to protect the remaining population. Now, two years later, the rehabilitated are being allowed home, complete with shock collars that will either control, or kill, them.

Velvet Ellis has struggled to care for her ten-year-old sister since her parents were taken in the round up. When she finds her mother in one of the "Kennels," Velvet resolves to do whatever it takes to put her family back together. But the danger isn’t over. It’s beginning all over again…

Review

Warning: Slight spoilers - I apologise

Contaminated started off a little slow. We meet Velvet and Opal who are sisters. Velvet only does half a day at school, the other half she works so she can look after her sister. Velvet is also out looking for her mum. After Velvet finds their mum, who they try to integrate back into society. Though they aren't accepted, and are forced to move back to their home pre-contamination days.
The story picks up pace after they find their mum. It's interesting, learning about the Connies and watching how their mum reacts. The latter half of the novel held my attention better.

We don't really get to see a lot of Opal, but I liked what we did get to know about her, and with her being young you can understand her ability to except change the way she did.
I wasn't sure about Velvet, until the school scene with the principal. Her little speech to him was awesome, and something I could totally see myself do if I were in her shoes. From that point on my opinion of her went up and I decided there and then that I liked her too.

Dillon is Jean's son, she runs the Conkennel for found Connies (Contaminated people). Dillon turns into the love interest. I really liked Dillon. I'm not sure why, he was just a nice character to read.

Overall, I enjoyed the story, the best part being the reactions and changes in Velvets mum. I'm interested to see on what is happening now though, as the book left on a slight cliffhanger - things are changing again, but now we don't know how.

On a side note, I wish to whine about the cover and title change. Originally it was called Velvet and this was the cover:

I think that bright cover is awesome and eye catching, while the new cover seems mass market and common. Also since the Connie's aren't really zombies the current cover isn't suitable.

Blog Tour: Review: Living Dead by Glenn Bullion with Giveaway

Title: Dead Living
Author: Glenn Bullion
Publication date: January 7th 2013
Publisher: Permuted Press
Genre: Horror/Zombies

Synopsis:
It didn’t take long for the world to die. And it didn’t take long, either, for the dead to rise.

Born on the day everything ended, a world filled with the walking dead is the only one that Aaron knows. Kept in seclusion, his family teaches  him the basics. How to read and write. How to survive.

Then Aaron makes a shocking discovery. The undead, who desire nothing but flesh, ignore him. It’s as if he’s invisible to them.

The survivors of the old suburb of Lexington call a high school their home. They live day to day, without any of the luxuries mankind used to enjoy. Samantha is a product of the new world. Alone, cold, looking out only for herself. She and the other residents of Lexington feel their hope dwindling. They need change. They need someone who can face the corpses. They need someone who can live in a city of the dead.

They need Aaron.

Review

I didn't know what to expect with this book. I have only read one other zombie book and loved it, and that was for a blog tour too. So I jumped at the chance to read and review another blog tour zombie book, and I'm glad to say I wasn't disappointed.

This started a little slow and predictable. The first chapter had a few hick ups (Sidney instead of Sydney, a few detail errors; ie, a zombie stuck in the truck who couldn't get out and was there for most of the chapter until the last paragraph where he somehow managed to get out) but nothing serious. There was a jump in time (14 years of it) which threw me a little because I thought the initial characters were going to be the story but they were more background details. After that the perspective changes and from there onwards it only grows in both story and pace.

I didn't grow attached to Samantha but I did like that she grew as a character within the story. Aaron was by far the best character. I loved his interaction and calm demeanor. They were the main lead characters though there were some other 'shady' characters that you weren't really meant to like anyway and the rest of the characters were more of a 'supporting cast'. This is a zombie book that is fairly focused on the romance more than the zombies. There isn't much detail to how the outbreak started but more of the life after it has happened and evolution.

There are some twists to keep the story interesting, and some blood and gore but not a whole lot. It's a quick read and would be a good place to start if you haven't read a zombie book before.

I live in Maryland with my wonderful wife and four cats. I love gaming, computer technology, movies, and of course, reading and writing. I love science fiction and especially horror and the paranormal. Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, anything supernatural, all beautiful subjects.

I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old. There’s just something about creating a story that I like. I always try come up with something that hasn’t been done, or is unique in some way. It could be someone with demonic powers, or something much more simple, such as a person that zombies ignore. It’s fun to create a character, give him or her a personality and background, and watch them evolve through a story.

I’ve tried other subjects, but always drift back to horror and paranormal. There’s a reason why we keep going back to horror movies and books, why they’ve made fifty Friday the 13th movies. People like to be scared, but more than that, I think paranormal and horror stir the imagination like nothing else. We’re all just a little nervous to open that closet door at midnight, or look under the bed.

Blog Tour: Interview with Melanie Karsak author of The Harvesting, plus Giveaway

I am super excited to have Melanie Karsak, author of The Harvesting, here today. I read and reviewed The Harvesting late last year and absolutely loved it. Without further ado.....

Welcome Melanie!
As I understand it, The Harvesting, is a trilogy of books. Is a trilogy in order due to so much story to tell?

Yes, I have an over-arching narrative I am trying to accomplish. I want the reader to see Layla and the other survivors from day one until the “problem” of the story resolves itself. There was just too much story to tell in just one novel!

Do you plan everything or just let the story flow?
I am a planner. I have to know the narrative arch of every story before I begin writing. I actually draw out the arch on a notepad before I begin writing. I usually have the entire story written in my head before I actually start typing. Occasionally I vary from my original plan if I come up with something better or if the characters get a mind of their own (this happens more often than sounds sane to admit). And sometimes I have to revise, but I always know what my characters want, what their goal is in a novel. This helps me stay focused.

What was the most important aspect when writing your non-zombie characters?
I try to keep them real. There are a lot of characters roaming around in “The Harvesting.” I wanted to make each person unique. I wanted them to react the way real people would react, and that is with a wide range of emotion, skills, and personalities.

For those that don't know, the last chapter is from a different point of view. Could you explain why you chose to show that in this book?
I wanted to show the z-day event from the perspective of a character who will be important in the rest of the series. My idea was to help the reader get to know Cricket and Vella before they appear in “The Shadow Aspect.”

How has it been for you to see the fan reaction for The Harvesting?
People really seem to like the book. Almost everyone who reads it seems to enjoy it. It seems like the introduction of “other” supernatural creatures about 100 pages in either makes it or breaks it for the reader. Some readers get turned off at that point, and that’s fine. Reading is an individual experience. This is not a horror novel. It is a dark fantasy novel. If someone wants a pure zombie romp, this isn’t it. This might be why some people are confused the supernatural element further reveals itself. But if you like a tale of the undead with fantastical elements, you will like it (maybe even love it!)

A couple of quick ones:
What is your favourite food?
When Pandora opened the box, inside she must have found a lox bagel platter from my local deli, Bagel Box, in Viera, Florida.  That bagel platter is worth upsetting the heavens.  A bagel platter may seem mundane, but that is, of course, because you have not had this particular bagel platter.  The bagel has homemade cream cheese, capers, red onion, lox, and fresh cut tomatoes on a freshly baked salt bagel.  Toasted.  With a giant pickle.  It is so good that every time I finish my bagel I feel sad.  When I die, if there is an afterlife, they will have an unlimited supply of lox platters from Bagel Box.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I like to write in the morning when my energy is the strongest, but most of the time I am awake until the wee hours of the morning as well. I have a full-time job and a family, so I don’t sleep much. I need there to be more of me! Too much to do!
Do you listen to music while writing?
For some projects, yes, and for other projects, I need dead silence. “The Harvesting” series didn’t have a lot of background music, but the Steampunk series I am working on has a lot of music playing in the background.

What’s your favorite season/weather?
I live in Florida, so it’s pretty much summer all year round. Having spent most of my life in the north, I despise cold weather. When it gets below 50 degree, I am very unhappy.
Pet Peeves?
People who are rude to small children in public places. I hate the younger version of myself who used to frown at parents in restaurants. Shame on you, younger self. Enjoy that big plate of karma.

I appreciate your time and really loved the book. Are there any parting thoughts you’d like to leave our reader’s with?
Stay in touch! If you liked the book, feel free to drop me an email or stop by my facebook page. I try to have giveaways and other fun stuff from time to time. I also have a new series coming out with an awesome new female protagonist I think readers will love!
Thank you so much for having me!

Thank you Melanie!

Excerpt
The bus ride to the quarantine facility took more than ten hours. I was shoved against the window by my seatmate who slept almost the entire trip. He was a big guy, taking up most of the seat, and when he slept his body lolled to the side, wedging me against the metal side of the bus. As we traveled, the air turned hot and dry, different than the humid, sticky climate of my coastal Texas hometown. The old school bus didn’t have air conditioning and the small windows didn’t let much air in. My seatmate’s body heat didn’t help. I was hot, thirsty, and had to pee in the worst way.
Wondering how much longer I’d be drooled on by the guy next to me, I strained my face against the window, looking for anything on the flat landscape.
That’s when I saw them.
I don’t know why I was surprised. I should’ve expected it after what had happened at the high school, but I hadn’t. It was worse than at the school—rioters everywhere. They waved anti-raffle signs and signs cursing the “Chosen.”
The land around the quarantine area was flat, dry, and dusty. The people lining the road sat under makeshift tents to keep out of the sun. Some stood on top of their RVs waving their handmade signs; one burned an American flag.
I watched women holding their small children toward the bus, begging with tear-stained faces for us to take them. I wanted to reach out and snatch them out of their mothers’ hands as we drove past. Several of the other people on the bus reached up and pushed their windows shut.
The National Guard at the quarantine site didn’t allow  people to get close enough to touch the bus. They were shot with rubber bullets or Tasered if they tried to cross the police line. Every time I heard the shot of the riot guns I jumped. My muscles ached from tensing them—waiting for the inevitable sound.
“Why are you crying?” A boy sitting in front of me looked at me like I’d grown another head. “They’d probably kill you and steal your place in the PODs if given the chance.”
I shook my head, remembering what my dad had told me. “They’re just scared,” I said. After all, they were, essentially, the walking dead.
The rioters screamed and cursed us. They threw rocks and eggs as we drove by. An egg hit the window next to me, the slimy insides plopping against my head, matting my hair.
“Gross,” the boy sitting next to me said.
I just looked at him and rolled my eyes.
Yeah, the egg is gross. And the drool coming out of your mouth and dripping on my leg while you slept, leaning on me, was glorious. The bus stopped in a fenced area like the one at the high school. The crowd screamed and banged the fence posts with their crude, homemade picket signs. Some climbed on the fence, pulling at it like chimpanzees at the zoo.
“Stay seated until your name is called,” a soldier yelled. “When you are called, grab your belongings and wait to be escorted into the building.”
Oh please, call this guy’s name. He needs to move before I shove him off the seat. I’m tired of being pinned against the side of the bus. I need some room.
Thankfully, my name was called soon after we stopped. I stood, stretched the kinks out of my muscles, and plowed through the massive body blocking me. Clambering over the other luggage that filled the aisle, I grabbed my two suitcases and stood in front of the bus.
The one-story brick building was large but had no windows, only a single green door. I couldn’t see the other sides, but I had a feeling there’d be no windows there, either—no glass for rioters to break through.
The soldier walked up from behind me, tapping my suitcase with his clipboard. “Follow me.”
I shuffled into the brick building, guided by the same guardsman who’d ripped me away from my parents hours earlier…
“I love you,” my mom said through her tears, her voice thick and trembling.
“I want to stay with you,” I pleaded.
“Come here, kiddo.” My dad, his face distorted with grief, folded me in a tight hug. He kissed the top of my head and told me he loved me and how proud he was of me. “I know, when this is over, you are going to do great things, Eva. you’re a fighter. I love you so much.”
A rough hand grabbed my arm, pulling me away from my dad. “Get on the bus,” the male voice ordered, yelling to be heard over the crying of parents and children saying their final goodbyes.
“I’m not done saying goodbye…” He didn’t let go, pulling me with him. My heels digging into the dirt, I tried to pull away. I needed one more hug, to hear them tell me they loved me and to tell them I loved them, too.
“MOM!” I screamed. “DAD!” Tears stained my face. The man thrust me toward the steps of the old, yellow school bus. I screamed one more time for my parents, telling them I loved them, reaching my arms out to them.
I could see my mom’s body rock with the force of her cries. Tears ran down my father’s face. “We love you, Evangelina,” I heard them call just before the bus door closed.
It was the last thing I’d hear my parents say. It was the last image I’d have of them. I pressed my hand to the window of the bus, my head bowed as I sobbed. I didn’t try to hide my tears. Everyone on the bus was crying for their families. We knew what awaited them.
Death.
I shook my head, trying to erase the horrible memory. I wanted to remember the good things about them, not saying goodbye.
Goodbyes are hard, but this one had been different. This wasn’t a goodbye, I’ll see you in a month. It was a permanent goodbye. I’d never see my parents again. The overwhelming sadness took over, like a black hole sucking me in. Fat, salty tears ran down my face, and I could feel my nose running. I wiped my arm across it. My eyes were swollen, my throat sore, and my chest tight.
I was alone. My parents were gone. No brothers or sisters. Just me—an orphan of the virus.

Advanced Praise For PODs

“…an energetic, tumultuous roller coaster ride that me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails…You know when Goodreads says “Meet You Next Favourite Book?” Well this is it! This is my favourite book of 2013…In my honest opinion Michelle Pickett is best-selling author material…overflowing with talent…It doesn’t feel like a debut book; her writing speaks of someone who has been writing and publishing books for years.”  ~ Keren of Gothic Angel Book Reviews

“It is very rare these days for a YA book to suck me in so thoroughly that I lose all concept of time and place, I’m just too busy for that.  But PODs did exactly that.  I was pulled right into Eva’s world and stayed there until the end… All in all, I give it my rare 5 out of 5 stars with a warning: Do not pick this book up unless you’ve cleared your schedule for several hours!”  ~ DJ of The Curvy Writer Blog

5 glowing, sparkling stars for this one!...I absolutely adored every character Michelle introduces us to. This book isn't just about a romance, or two people fighting some battle. This book allows us to get to know several, amazing, diverse characters who all grab your heart (even a few who have attitude issues). They all held such an important place in the story… Now for the plot. Holy crap!... Michelle did a flippin' fantastic job giving us each piece of this puzzle… I won't go into details about what happens after they are removed from the POD but O-M-G! The action never stops…This book seriously needs to be a movie. I could picture every detail and already see it playing out on screen. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!”  ~ Jessica of Total Bookaholic

I'm a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction and paranormal romances and have recently started dabbling in young adult contemporary romance. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.
I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and eat way too many while I write, have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one, and I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television. An unabashed romantic, I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days.
I wrote my debut young adult novel, PODs, in 2011. PODs, a science/fiction, post-apocalyptic romance, will be released June 4, 2013 through the amazing Spencer Hill Press.  My second young adult title, Milayna, a paranormal romance, will release through Spencer Hill Press beginning in March 2014. Milayna is a standalone, with series potential. It’s meant to be a trilogy. The Infected, a PODs novel, will release November 2014. It is the second, and last, book in the PODs series.
I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  I now reside in a small community outside Houston, Texas with my incredibly supportive, not to mention gorgeous, husband, three amazing school-aged children, a 125-pound lap dog, and a snooty cat.

Review

The Harvesting is the first zombie novel I have read and I loved it.  It's fast paced, intriguing, well written, and action packed. The Harvesting is a horror about zombies but with some vampires, and spirits in the mix as well.

The story is mainly focused on Layla who is the main character. Layla is likeable and a kick-ass heroine. I also loved her Grandma. All the characters have their own personality and you grow to love some, and dislike others. That said the author has no problem killing off someone if needed, so watch out!

If you are spooked when reading horrors, this is definitely not the book to read at night, but because it's so good you should still read it, just at day time.

My only niggle with the story was that the infection wasn't detailed. Other then the flu like symptoms of the virus that caused the undead, there was no explanation as to why it didn't affect everyone.
There was also the "ending" of one side of the story and the switch to something different. Like the start of the second book being the ending to the first book. This left me a little confused due to the switch. This is a little hard to explain without giving away some of the story, so I apologise if that doesn't make a huge amount of sense.

Like I said they were only little niggles. They definitely didn't detract from the story, nor my enjoyment of it. I am anxious to see where this all goes especially since it is a trilogy.

If you enjoy horror/zombie stories this is definitely one to add to your TBR list!
